A Self-Made King

Jul 6, 2025    Pastor Reid McAteer

In this powerful message, we're challenged to examine who truly reigns as king in our lives. The story of Adonijah from 1 Kings 1 serves as a stark reminder of the dangers of self-proclamation and pride. Like Adonijah, we often try to crown ourselves as rulers of our own destinies, forgetting that true fulfillment comes only when we surrender to God's authority. This sermon beautifully illustrates how our attempts at self-rule often lead to emptiness and despair, while submitting to God's kingship brings joy, peace, and purpose. We're encouraged to reflect on areas where we might be trying to 'play God' in our lives and to consider the freedom that comes with letting go of control. The parallel drawn between our relationship with God and a parent-child dynamic is particularly poignant, reminding us of God's desire to provide for and guide us, if only we'd let Him. This message invites us to step down from our self-made thrones and experience the transformative power of acknowledging God as the true King of our lives.
